We provide comprehensive diabetes education to help people with diabetes better manage their blood glucose levels. The program at Newton Medical Center is recognized by the American Diabetes Association as meeting national standards for diabetes education. Our program is staffed by registered nurses and registered dietitians.

Comprehensive Group Class: Improve Diabetes Self Management
The diabetes self-management class is conducted by a nurse educator and a registered dietitian. The comprehensive program includes an individual pre-assessment session with a registered nurse, followed 1 week later by a one day group class. Some of the topics covered include medications, blood sugar monitoring, reducing risks of long-term complications, food label reading , and meal planning.

Individual Nutrition Therapy for Diabetes
We offer individual nutrition sessions with one of our registered dietitians. The session will focus on individualized meal planning for better glucose control. Training resources include food models, the Food Guide Pyramid, the diabetes “exchange lists”, and carbohydrate counting techniques.

Diabetes Support Group
In addition to the above services, Newton Medical Center offers monthly support group meetings free of charge for people with diabetes.  The class meets the first Monday of every month in the Physician’s Pavilion next to Newton Medical Center.
