At Newton Medical Center, doctors are offering men from all over the United States and abroad a revolutionary procedure for the treatment of prostate cancer - called ProstRcision. According to the American Cancer Society, Prostate Cancer kills 40,000 men in the United States each year.

Using PSA test data, the latest medical research contends that only two treatment methods offer patients a good chance of curing prostate cancer. The first is radical prostatectomy, which is surgical removal of the prostate gland. The second is ProstRcision, which is a radiation prostatectomy. PSA is a large protein produced only by prostate cells and is measured by a simple blood test.

At Newton Medical Center, doctors perform radiation prostatectomy on an outpatient basis. Using a two-step process whereby a specially trained urologist and radiation oncologist implant radioactive seeds directly into the prostate using ultrasound technology, patients are able to receive a concentrated dose of radiation to the prostate gland with little radiation to the adjacent organs. Three weeks after the implantation, the patient undergoes external radiation, with treatments taking no more than 20 minutes each day, for five days per week for six to seven weeks.
